Break Barriers Open Doors for Inclusive Society and Development for All
Over one billion people, or approximately 15 per cent of the world’s population, live with some form of disability. The disabled community is the most neglected community in the world facing many problems from home to society. They have to face discrimination and barriers in all fields of life. In some of the developed countries like USA, Japan, Korea etc. the disabled persons have struggled in the real sense for the creation of right based and inclusive society but on the other hand the disability movement is in process. Since the inception of Independent Living for persons with disabilities in Pakistan, disability movement is making progress with each passing day. Milestone Society for the Special Persons celebrated International Day of Persons with Disabilities on 3rd December, 2013 in collaboration with University of Management and Technology, Lahore by conducting an awareness walk and peaceful demonstration focusing the UN theme for this year “Break Barriers Open Doors forInclusive Society and Development for All”. The 3rd of December is celebrated every year in the whole world by the disabled community and the previous year’s themes were as following:
The day was celebrated by Milestone Society for the special persons students of University of Management and Technology and dignities, the focus was to aware the masses of the rights of persons with disabilities who are deprived of the basic facilities of life including their equal rights as well. The walk started early in the day where participants chanted slogans concerning disability rights and they were holding play cards read persons with disability should be included in life opportunities and there must be equal and right based approach.
Speaking on the occasion President Milestone Mr. Shafiq Ur Rehman said that the disabled persons are the equal respectable part of society and they must be treated with deserved dignity like their counterparts, he emphasized that we have to break barriers and open doors for inclusion of persons with disability as we have equal rights and we are contributing in national building so there should be no discrimination in social attitudes and practices. He appreciated the leaders in disability movement who have produced agents of change those who are serving in disability movement.
The documentary of Milestone activities was presented on projector to aware the students and masses of the contribution of Milestone and for the inclusion of persons with disability in society. the Director university of Management and Technology in his speech paid thanks and gratitude to Milestone and the students for celebrating this day of persons with disability and resolved that there will be constant effort for the creation of inclusive and barrier free society for all. He appreciated the role and contribution of Milestone Society for the special persons for the creation of awareness and producing agents of change that are serving as role model and asset of courage for others.
